Hungarian seasonal tip: Mum’s elderberry juice is the best!

The all time favourite drink for Hungarian children (and probably for adults) is the elderberry syrup. Serve it cold with a slice of lemon to your friends and you will be praised to the skies. In May and early June you might see some huge white flowers on a bigger bush around roads and parks. This is the elderberry (Sambucus nigra)

For medical purposes it is used as well but this time we recommend it as:

One of the best local refresher. The elder syrup can be bought in any shops and you can ask for it in bars. For thoose who would challenge themselves in a Budapest kitchen:

It’s time to try making the glorious elderberry syrup. Easy to make, cheaper and healthier than any other factory made plastic bottled refresher.

Requirements:

- Elderberry flowers 8-10 big ones , 80 dkg sugar, 1 dkg tartaric acid / borkősav, 2 lemons, clean and empty bottles, two days patience.

How to do it?

Visit one the Buda hill sights and beauty spots. For example Normafa or János Hegy. Take your family and friends with you. Take a picture from above on our favourite capital. Take a walk in the forest and look for an elder tree. Pick only the healthy flowers which smell good. Use a paperbag to collect them.

Back home get a big pot. Boil 5 liters of water. If cooled add the sugar and the juice of a lemon, slice the other one in it. Add the flowers and mix it. Take it to a cool and dark place. Mix it up twice everyday. After 48 hours your patience will be honored! First filter the juice. You can add some more lemon juice if like it. Pour the juice into the bottles. Finally: serve it cool with still water and a slice of lemon. (Did you know that Hungary’s tap water is drinkable?) Lasting for 4-5 days. Keep it in the fridge.

What do you find at the flea market of Budapest? More than trash and even more than treasures. Clourful faces. Diversity in nations, religions and old goods. False and true gold jewellery of any kind, lost and sold memories from Hungary. You can get one of them this time for a reasonable price.

How to get there?

Travel to Boráros tér. (Take no 2 - 4-6 tram) Get on the bus no. 54 (see bus timetable ) Do not get off till the 20th stop what is ’Naszód utca – Használtcikk piac’. The driver usually announces the magical word ’Ecseri’. This time follow the not so well dressed Hungarians, traders and other tourists.

Basic rules

Taking a look is free. The normal price is at least doubled as you first ask. You might ask before you take a picture on someone. Do not take picture on children. Tolerance is required. Enjoy the bustle of the market. Do not throw away your trash and butt. But eat a ’lángos’.

Dress code: do not wear good shoes as this talks most on your financial situation.

It was really stimulating to work together with the young artists groups, and to show them the 8th district from every possibly angle.

On the way from London to Istambul the Guardian journalists highlight the specialities of the capitals. So they came to Budapest and surely had a great time. The horse-race at Heroe's square was their only touristic stop. After that we won the horse-race bet with the help of the 8th district locals. If it were not enough we had the chance to enter the last traditional shtiebel in Budapest.

Follow the blue!

Have you ever been to the Blaha Lujza square? You certainly have. If you happened to travel with the tram number 4-6 or the bus number 7, you have crossed this square, for sure.
On one corner of Blaha there is a McDonalds. Don't worry I'm not advertising here the McDonalds, but the long wide street next to it. It is called the Népszínház street.

Just walk along and open your eyes. I know it's not the shiniest neither the most elegant avenue of Budapest. Still, if you carefully look up, you will surely discover magnifique views beside the greyness and crowdness of this shabby though lively street.

Choose a colour for example, and try to discover everything interesting of this special colour.
Let's say: blue!
Look for blue sights along the Népszínház street! Here are some photos to help!

Think Twice in the 8th

Beyond Budapest team organised four thematic tours for the participants of

Think Twice Audiovisual Workshop.

The four visits were held in the 8th district, Budapest. During the 'workshop' walks we made a special focus on: the local churches, markets, art galleries, the locals themselves and the aristocratic palaces of 'The District'.

The aim of the tours was to collect impressions from the different spectrums of the city life. Over 20 amaizing places were visited all in all. Local guides, hosts, institutions and the Local Government were helping our program.

The four groups are making short movies reflecting on the visited places and tematics.On the 18th of November You can watch the movies Yourself, in Toldi Cinema.

Harry Sachs: The Nature of Photography

Hidden at the south-east shore of lake Balaton, in a 50-acre old-growth forest with 2km of beach front, lies the former government holiday resort of the communist party, the MSZMP holiday resort (Balatonaliga - Fürdőtelep).

In the late 1950s, General Secretary János Kádár had turned the public holiday resort into a strictly guarded, enclosed area, closed for common people. During the following decades, international communist politicians like Fidel Castro, Breschniew and Erich Honecker were hosted in Aliga. Since 1989, the coastal resort is lying in a deep sleep and nature has taken over the power.
The show documents this actual condition of transition: The reproduced wild nature slowly fades on the forest photographs found on the walls of the functionaries' villas, while all around these images real nature is breaking through. Abstract fungal and ivy structures are growing all over the architecture accompanied harmonically by huge geometric spider nets stretched out in the air and expressionist patterns of mould illustrating walls and ceilings.

European Heritage Days 2009

Dear Culture Seekers!

Many of the outstanding Hungarian cultural institutes, private houses, galleries will be opened for the European Heritage Days (EHD) 2009 (in Hungarian http://www.oroksegnapok.hu/ ).

In the 8th district you will find a whole bunch of free weekend programmes. Your lucky saturday and sunday is the 19-20th of September 2009. Where ever you will be the simpliest thing to remember is the symbol of the EHD.

One of the best programmes we recommend is the Hungarian Roma Parlament - Atelier House co-operation with exhibitions of the Hungarian and Roma contemporary art, concerts, games, cafe and more. The programmes will be held on saturday 11am-19pm, sunday 11am-18pm at Tavaszmező utca 6.
One of their higlights will be the Sunday Concert presented by Rudolf Czene(piano) and Lajos Sárközy(violin)

Innovative tourism in Budapest

Budapest Beyond Sightseeing was chosen to be a 'Good Practice' in the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009 (EYCI). By the decision of the European Commission our activity as societal enterpreneurs became a good example in Europe.

On the 8th and 9th of July 2009 some of these Eurpoean examples and their steakholders were invited to a conference to share the experiences and future possibilities.

The second flagship conference of the EYCI was focusing on the regional aspects of creativity and innovation. The three selected themes were: employment, wellbeing and education.

We were honored to make a presentation of the 8th district and about our Socio-cultural walking tours. The summarization of our project can be found among some other Hungarian highlighted practices.

The conclusions of the conference will be soon issued at the Creativity website.

The team of Budapest Beyond Sightseeing is greatful to the 8th district citizens and it's partners for the successful co-operation and good intention.

Visit the Roma Parlament

The Springfield street is a colorful and real time-worn place to visit in the 8th district. The original Hungarian name of the street is Tavaszmező (means springfield). Once it was the centre of the Budapest prostitutes. Now it is a well known place by the students of Budapest Tech Polytechnical Institution which takes place at Tavaszmező as well. During the II. World War first Nazi, than Russian soldiers tore the neighborhood. In 1956 the Russian soldiers left their marks againe on the fascades with AK47 machine guns.

After the democratic change happened in Hungary (1989) the first official minority-roma institution the Roma Parlament (RP) was founded. And in the story of the famous house a new chapter has began. The political representation is only one of the important functions of the RP. Social case-work, law assistance and funding talented gipsy students are held here as well. The RP is giving place to the only permanent Roma art exhibition in Hungary. It is highly recommended to see who they are. Before visiting, please write an e-mail, but weekdays you can find the RP opened at the first floor.

If you live in Budapest or you plan to visit the Hungarian capital in this new year 2009, there is one thing you will certainly need. The brand new styled"Only in Budapest" guidebook.

I am Hungarian. I live in Budapest for 27 years. I work as a guide for a few years. And still the book gives me new clues to understand Budapest and new pieces of information about the capital too.

You surely know the average guidebooks which tell you the exact dates, must to know details and stories of the buildings in a perfect yet perfectly booring way.

The "Only in Budapest" guidebook is just the opposite. It puts every story and date in a context, in an understandable background. And this approach explains much more than just a normal description of a sight.

The "Only in Budapest" does not only talks about the famous sights but looks for some more adventuorus although less popular, less touristic places as well. I feel the book gives a more realistic and more colourful picture of Budapest. Why don't you chose to see this human faced Budapest rather than the shiny, for tourists Budapest?

I don't meant this to be an advertisement. I just love the book, and if I were a tourist in a foreign capital I would chose this way to look around.

The auther of the book: Duncan J. D. Smith seems to be an intreseting figure as well. He tarvelled all around the world and specified in 'urban exploring'. He knows a lot, that's for sure.

Journalists in the 8th

It was our honor to guide 16 journalists from all over the world to the 8th district. The guests were invited to Hungary by The Palace of Arts. Instead of visiting glittering avenues we discovered some hidden places. The group was invited by the Molnár Anni Gallery to familiarize with contemporary Hungarian art. We could not miss the cafe and cakes at Horváth Mihály square pastry shop. Finishing the program we visited a gipsy musician family to have a real face-to-face experience. Presented by Budapest Beyond Sightseeing in the 8th district.

It is autumn time and it is time to slow down. What would be the best place to get relaxed? A nice park, that is for sure! If you do not have the time to get out of the noisy city visit the ELTE Botanical Garden our 'Füvészkert'. Unique Budapest experience in september with banana trees. The park is opened from 9am to 17pm every day. The entrancy fee is friendly: 500HUF (2Euro) adults, 250HUF students. If you have already visited our 'flat land' it will be easy to find. If not, here is your helping map.

The hungarians know the 'Füvészkert' very well from the famous Molnár Ferenc novel 'Pál utcai fiúk'. The atmosphere of the garden still reminds to the young boys and their heart-piercing story. However the garden changed a lot, the famous lake disappeared. What is still original is the 'Festetics hunting-seat' built in 1802. The squirrels and Ginko trees are waiting for You.

Flat land

You will find an amazing view if visiting a hidden post-communist block. The "Szigony Lakótelep" is surrounded by the modern city area, the eclectic style facades and the clinic area. The neighbourhood is famous among the Hungarians. What Hungarians surely know about the ' Szigony lakótelep' is, that the poverty rate and the drog users number is higher than any other average block of flats. A huge Chinese colony and musician gipsies also live behind the concrete walls. In the 18th and 19th century this was a marchland with a cemetery and a hunting forest. As the city grew at the turning of the 20th century it became an important commercial and industrial area. At the second world war many of the houses nearby were damaged. The communist regime forced to build block houses instead of renovation. That's how the 'Szigony Lakótelep' was born in the '70s. If you visit the plase we recommend you a very unique, very local pub. It is called the 'Tisza presszó' , named after the second biggest river of Hungary.

Are you curious? It is easy to get there: just jump on the bus 9. or 109 at Astoria or Deák tér and get off at the Koszorú utca station. Do not forget to validete your BKV ticket.

St. Rita - mission impossible

Somewhere in the hidden Joseptown stands a chapel which became a place of pilgrimage.
After the second world war's siege a small church was built in the place of a destroyed tyre repair workshop. First it was used by the neighbouring Magdolna Hospital's believers.
By the years it became one of the most important pilgrimage places of Budapest.

The name Saint Rita comes from a XIV.th century saint who gave her life to God.

Saint Rita was born in Italy in the XIV.th century. She lived a solitude life in her childhood already. When she grow up she had to get married to an evil man. After years of fighting and beating trial Saint Rita tamed her husband and gave birth to two sons. Finally when harmony arrivedto the family the husband was murdered and the two children died as well. So Saint Rita joined a religious order in Cascia. As a wife of Jesus Christ she lived till 1457. She became the patron saint of the impossible cases.

If You are brave enough to visit the chapel in the middle of a 'non tourist land' get to Blaha Lujza square. Than follow the Népszínház street (Mc Donald's corner) till Teleki square and turn left. You will find the chapel at Kun street 5.

Dear visitor!

This brand new blog's aim is:

- to provide You programmes connected to the 8th district;

- to guide You to the hidden sights;

- to turn the slummy 8th district into a lively place.

Why the 8th? This part of the city is the poorest area of Budapest with a bad reputation. For us, social workers and social policy makers it is a field to help. Also we have lived here, and fall in love with the charme of the place. We have decided to use our own methods to help. Help's first step was a fieldwork, than guided sightseeing tours (our hobby and job at the same time), now a blog.
